PORTA MAGICAE

A DOOR TO  EVERYWHEN

The Porta Magicae Adventure Book Series is the culmination of an idea we have been dreaming about and researching for decades:

The creation of a universe of adventure stories for time travelers of all ages, designed to bridge cultural divides.”

“A magic door opens to adventurers from countries around the world to travel through time and space, introducing them to other cultures and to the idea that we are all more alike than we believe —that the more we learn about each other and the places we come from, the better our experience will be navigating this incredible world of ours.”

We create adventure books in collaboration with authors, researchers, and artists from around the globe. Our goal is to write books with adventures from every country the door travels to. Therefore, we visit every country in search of clues, images, stories, and anything and everything that could lead us to the Porta Magicae. We chronicle our findings in the pages of our books so you can join us on our adventures and travel with us everywhere and everywhen.

But although books are our passion, our travels have become much more than a catalyst for our stories. When you collect stories as we do, you also collect friends and memories and fall in love with their communities. That has led to wonderful partnerships and incredible projects and has developed into the Porta Magicae Project.

HOW TO USE THIS SITE

This page you’re on is your gateway to the Porta Magicae Universe. As you scroll down, you will find short introductions and links that will take you to the different sections of the site. You will also find those shortcuts in the main menu at the top of every page.

Since our stories unfold around the world, so too does the development of our books—several of our books are being created simultaneously in different locations. We are everywhere… and everywhen!

We have built this site so you can learn about the Porta Magicae Universe even before the books come out. We suggest you first explore this page before you click any other buttons and open any other doors. Then browse our book introductions at “The Books” and register, so you are the first to know when the books appear on shelves everywhere.

Once you have read about our upcoming books, we suggest exploring “The Lore,” “The Quest,” and “The Archives” in order for a more complete experience—and do not miss the real magic happening behind doors by taking a look at “The Projects” Porta Magicae is creating around the globe and “The Making”, to see how everything is done. Then stroll through our “Gallery,” so you can see all the beautiful art created in distant locations while traveling in search of the magic door. Finally, learn about our online and on-location art “Workshops” we hold as we travel… and don’t forget to contact us, letting us know what your interests are, so we can keep you updated!

OUR MISSION

We strongly believe in our mission to create a universe of stories for adventurers of all ages designed to bridge cultural divides.

• • •

The universe we dream about, when it comes to friendship, has no borders. To create that universe, in the spirit of Porta Magicae, we work with writers, researchers, anthropologists, biologists, architects, sociologists, librarians, educators, students, painters, illustrators, graphic designers, animators, videographers, producers, musicians, composers, and many other creative minds from all walks of life—and very importantly, from everywhere and everywhen!

THE BEGINNING

THE PORTA MAGICAE PROJECT

The Porta Magicae Project encompasses everyone and everything that goes through our magic doors: our team, our books, our travels, our classes, our social media, our readers, and our supporters. But when you have the kind of energy the Porta Magicae has on its side, very special projects actually emerge as we travel and get to know the people and see the locations firsthand.

GALLERY SELECTION

Original sketches, drawings, paintings, and photographs from around the world, created by the authors while in pursuit of the magic door

A magical ‘lore’ is embraced when designing and writing for the Porta Magicae Project, including this website—yet every study, painting, and photograph is very real and every location actually visited. This collection is the product of years of travel, research, and cultural immersion, as we work to capture some of the most singular destinations on Earth to feature in our books. Out of hundreds of images, this selection is carefully curated and periodically updated to best represent the depth and breadth of our experiences and to showcase the highlights of the landscape, architecture, flora, fauna, and the communities that we encounter. Behind each image lives a story. Behind each piece of art passed days on end of sketching and photographing details, of creating light and color studies at different hours, of finding the best angles and perspectives—we draw the crowds and draw portraits of individuals, and we collect memories of our conversations—anything and everything that could help us better capture the essence of a culture, a sense of place, a moment in time. The result is a collection unlike any other—watercolors, drawings, oils, and photographs that transport you into the lives of uncontacted indigenous peoples, onto the streets of Rome, among the Galápagos’ rarest inhabitants, and alongside the still waters of Japan’s most serene temples

The proceeds from the sales help support the making of the books

If you find that a piece you are interested in is no longer available, please contact us. As we study and capture locations from multiple angles and at different times of the day, we might still have a piece you would love. We also accept commissions.
